Sometimes You Just Need An Advocate

While Ryker was in the NICU, a couple of the nurses mentioned to us that he may qualify for the Synagis Shot. Which is a shot given to greatly decrease the chance of RSV. The shot is $2000 and they get several of them. The nurses thought that because he was born early and smack dab in the middle of cold and flu season that he would be able to be approved. And this sounded wonderful to us, so we asked the nurse practitioner and she said that we wouldn't qualify because he wasn't born early enough.

Oh well, we were having enough problems with how early he was born as it was, we were glad he hadn't been born any earlier so, we would just have to be careful. But we were very nervous. We have so many kids.... so many germs. And he was so sick.

But then when we took him in for his two week appointment, our pediatrician mentioned to us again, that he would probably qualify.

We said that we were told in the hospital that we didn't.

She said, "Well, sometimes you just need someone who knows your whole story, to tell your story"

On Friday, Raleigh got the call that we did in fact qualify, the shot was being sent to the pediatricians office and he could get started on it right away.No reactions to my shot... at all... and hopefully no RSV for this boy.

Thank goodness for diligent doctors who love us. One less thing for the Lunds to have to worry about.

Well I'm glad Ryker qualified for the RSV shot but I'm sad that he had to get stuck with another needle. Poor baby has certainly had his share of needles and tubes, etc. I know he won't remember any of this but it's hard on his parents (and grandparents)! I'm also glad that your doctor is looking out for you, we all need an advocate every now and then.

What an absolutely precious little guy! I'm so happy you were approved for that shot. Conner had RSV at 4 months. He spent 13 days in the hospital and 11 of those in an oxygen tent. It was a very scary time. I am so glad they have come up with a shot for these little ones and I'm so glad that he was able to qualify to get one too!

P.S. I really think Ryker looks like Kaleigh in this first picture
